Cacao naturally contains large amounts of theobromine, a compound which stimulates the cardiovascular system, resulting in an elated, warm feeling.
The composition of theobromine is similar to caffeine, but promotes a more gentle and long lasting boost.
Theobromine doesn’t stimulate the nervous system, which is why we are less likely to feel that jittery sensation that we might feel when we’ve had a bit too much coffee.
